Simple Joys of Summer

I am not cut out to be a beach girl - I get hot quickly and burn easily, and my face has freckles year-round, even under the cloudy sky or in a snow storm. But I love swimming and I love experiencing the contrast of the hot sand (or rocks) and cool water. So at least a few times during our short but gorgeous Summer, I make a point to go to one of the many beautiful beaches around Puget Sound to sunbathe and swim.

I often take my daughter with me, sometimes with her friend, throw sunblock, a few tasty bites, a book and a notebook (paper one, that is) in a pretty canvas bag or basket, and we are ready for a full day of adventure! The waters of Puget Sound are fine for splashing and dipping, but quite cold for swimming, and most of the beaches are rocky, not sandy. But once you live here long enough, you learn of a few places where you can get sand under your feet and/or pleasantly warm water, perfect for swimming on a hot day.

So it was this time - Anya and I took our Outback for a ride, and in a little over an hour we arrived at such a place on Hood Canal. We were swimming and sunbathing, reading and chatting, having a bite and taking pictures of each other, and generally had a great fun. I was debating whether to share this photo shoot on my blog or wait till I have an opportunity to shoot with Justin, for a more professional quality of pictures, and decided to share these. Justin was encouraging too, because the happy and playful mood of these pictures is hard to beat, and if I have a chance to shoot this outfit in the near future, I can always make another post! Not only I don't mind posting the same clothing, I even prefer it. It makes me happy to come up with new combinations and see that the clothes I bought get good use.

I splurged for this two-piece swim suit and cover-up from Lane Bryant this year. Last time I bought one, was exactly two years ago (post Off with Your Pants), and I still love wearing it to the beach during Summer and to the pool during Winter (I just really love water!). But I wanted to find something fresh, and this bohemian style attire simply stole my heart. I love the slight shimmer of the olive swim suit and the gorgeous crochet detail, and the cover-up is so glamorous, bursting with tropical blooms.

Above: My lovely photographer.
Below: My dear friend Mila sent this photo of me from our vacation to the Black Sea back in 1997.
I can't believe it was almost 20 years go, seems like yesterday!
By the way, I adored that Italian navy style blue swim suit with contrasting gold buttons and gold tie on the brief.

Anya and I are certainly partly mermaids. What about you? Do you love swimming?
Is there a favorite place you go during Summer?

  1. Your photos really convey the joy and happiness! And your daughter seems a very able photographer.
You know that Finland has about 180 000 lakes? And I spent my childhood summers by one of them. But I never learned to swim, still can't swim...

    1. Thank you, Tiina! Anya loves photography, but one thing is to take pictures of what *you* are interested in, and another thing to take pictures of what someone else asks you to take pictures. :) I think she did a wonderful job here - we were happy and relaxed, it always is the key it seems.
When I was writing about Valaam (one of my recent posts), I read about Finland a little and looked at the map. There are lots of water in Finland. :) I had no idea that you had that many lakes, of course. It is similar to some places in northern Russia.

  2. What a wonderfull post Natalia ♥️ This swimsuit is sooooo adorable. Cute this bohemian look. Hm. I don't know called Häkelspitze in english ?! Great pictures, they have a magical spirit. I love this.
In my younger days I very often go swimming. At the moment rarely. I like to sit on the water and look, or drink something, or make a walk in water.
Wish you a wonderfull weekend, Tina

    1. The word is "crochet" in English. Isn't it lovely? I just had to have it! I am glad you liked it too. I love bold swimwear, something untypical, and this one fits the bill.
I don't swim very often, despite the fact that we live by the sea. But I love it when I do. :)
      Much love.

  3. beautiful mermaids!
your swimsuit ist gorgeous with that lovely lace trim and the muted colors - sooo vintage-y :-) and your hat and tropical beach cover make it round!
    anya made wonderful photos!
i like to swim in natural water, no pools for me. a quiet lake in the woods, a empty beach - best with waves, or the river in front of our house - heavy streaming - if you swim in a normal tempo against then you just stay in the same position over the ground :-)

    1. I know what you mean about swimming in river, Beate! :) I just love water, any kind will do for me. But I probably swim more often in the winter time - we have a wonderful pool near home, just 5 min away. And there is sauna too, so it is very relaxing and energizing. For swimming in the sea or lakes, it is always driving time - our sea is too cold for it. Even when we lived in a beach house, I would dip and splash on hot days, maybe swim briefly, but not very often. But we took lots and lots of walks on the beach. :)

  4. I do love the crochet embellishment on the suit, and you wear the Boho look really well! Anya's shots show promise as a fashion photographer, and water and beach are always a great backdrop. I don't swim, but love bodies of water. We love our Sequim Bay, but sadly, it's quite a bit polluted. I look forward to seeing Justin's shots, too!

    1. Thank you, Elsbeth, you are so kind! I was planning to take my swim suit to our vacation next week, but it seems the weather will not be very beach-friendly. Still, we can give it a try. :)
I did not know Sequim Bay is polluted. I am sorry to hear it. It is gorgeous!

  5. These photos are stunning. I love your swimsuit and cover up, and Anya really captured the spirit of day in these. Justin was so right. I liked the flashback photo too. I used to love swimming, pools, beaches, but not so much now as I melt in the heat. You do it right: book, nibblies, dips, shade, and photos. Sounds like a perfect day.

    1. Thank you, Melanie! It's always delightful to hear from you. We had a good day, Anya and I, and I'm glad we have these photos (and videos :) too - nuts for a winter day. :)

  6. Ooohhhhh, I hear you there. I like to joke that I burn faster than a piece toast. Still, even with that and the fact that summertime heat usually drains me (as a multiple chronic illness fighter) something fierce, I still wildly love summer and will bask in the sun with glee nearly any chance I can get. :)

Your swimsuit is so lovely! The crochet trim is eye-catching and elegant, and something - come to think of it - that we don't see near enough on swimwear.

Many hugs & joyful weekend wishes,
    ♥ Jessica

    1. I agree with you, Jessica - crochet isn't a common detail on swimwear. Very 70s vibe, which I love. :) Enjoy your Summer!

  7. Looks like you two girls had a wonderful day and the photos capture it just so well. Your suit and cover up are wonderful, so good to see something a little different.I am not really much of a swimmer but do like a trip to the beach just to sit on the sand and walk along the beach. Enjoy that Summer sunshine.

  9. You've got yourself one talented photographer there (and such a beauty, too!)
Love the crochet detail on your swimsuit and that fabulous beach dress.
It's not fair, I was born to live on a beach and swim in the sea but unfortunately couldn't be more landlocked here in the British midlands! x

    1. Thank you, Vix! I was also born in "midlands" - they actually call that area "the geographical center of Russia"... days and days before you reach a sea, not even hours. But I dreamed about living by the sea, and for the past 9 years it is my everyday life. I love sea. Dreams come true! :)

  10. I recently got back from island Hvar. I went there with my friend (also called Ivana) and we stayed there at my grandmother's house. It was the perfect vacation, one week of swimming and reading...the only things we had to worry about was what we are going to cook that day and when to get out of the sun. It was the perfect vacation. As my friend said, vacation is a state of mind, it doesn't have to be a day at the beach, just finding some time to relax, but to me honest for me the best way to relax is being on a beach...or being with those I love. So spending time with my grandmother and my friend was perfect for me:)

I really like your swimsuit (the crochet detail is so lovely) and the cover up is lovely too. This year one piece swimsuits are very trendy. Anya took great photos, she has a good eye and I'm not surprised because artist talent usually runs in the family. It is so nice to see that you're enjoying your summer.

It's a two piece suit that looks like a one piece. I decided to go with something a little different.

Love the gorgeous one piece suit and the way it is trimmed! The cover up is stunning too, and I can see you are enjoying the beach! That makes me happy. "your lovely photographer" is sure growing up!
    Loved the older photo, too!

  12. What a pretty suit with the crochet trim and the coloring really suits you! It's funny, I just wrote a post this afternoon about the pleasures of the beach and swimming...

I have a vacation in a few more weeks. I can't go away anywhere but it will be nice to spend many long days at the beach.

I've never been a huge fan of beach, but I've found some fabulous beaches to enjoy. But now I'm going to the swimming pool very frequently!

    1. It's fun for me to learn that you also love swimming! I swim much more frequently in wintertime - not enough sun and warmth outside, and a pool as well as a spa are my best way to rejuvenate. Visiting a beach does it even in winter time, of course - even a walk on the beach helps to relax.
