Tights as Inspiration

Do you change outfits a few times a day, not for any practical reason, but just 'cause it's fun? I know that since I started blogging, I do. I also very rarely repeat the same outfit again. It's more interesting to find new ways of mixing for me these days. So, this particular outfit actually started as adding these fun floral tights to another outfit I wore earlier in the day. When I put them on, I realized that shoes were wrong, so I changed shoes. Still did not work, so I realized I need to change the whole outfit just because of the tights. Easiest thing to do would be, of course, just add another pair of tights, which would go well with the previous outfit. But this pair was so much fun to look at! I don't remember when I had floral tights last time... when I was 17, perhaps?

So before I knew it, I wore a whole different outfit. All pieces here are old and well loved. This pencil skirt is a working horse for a few months. Polka dot blazer adds a fun side to any outfit, very comfortable and soft, and very flattering fit, so yes, I wear it a lot too. The tee-shirt was bought a while ago at Goodwill for 3 or 4 bucks - fun design and colors! The earrings here are the oldest part - I bought them probably 8 years ago on sale at Ann Taylor Loft. You might not notice from the pictures, but they are very intricate filigree design, and I adore them. Anna offered me her feather earrings to go with the tee design, and she has very pretty earrings in her own collection. But I chose this old pair. Feathers for the next time then. Maybe for a fun party?

I don't think I talked about this pair of ballet flats in the blog. They were found on clearance sale at Nordstrom Rack a little while ago. I aim for 30 to 40 dollars per pair, I think I did mention it before. If a regular price is a hundred or more, I consider it a bargain to find brand new shoes for about 30 bucks a pair. They are super comfy and light, and I can easily pack them inside of my purse if I want to have a change with me. I also like their warm, somewhat coppery metallic shimmer.

Not sure why my lip color look so strange on this photo.... weird...

I did not wear colored tights before I started blogging. These few purchases I consider among my bravest decisions about style. :) I know, it does not seem so brave to many of you. But to me, it was. And so was starting to wear pencil skirts again, after a few years hiding my legs under jeans or long skirts. Again, it might not seem like much... but it actually is. :)

Here are a few other outfits featuring colored tights I posted on my blog. I like seeing how my style journey progresses. One little change at a time. :)

I played with green tights in the post "Leopard in Autumn Garden"

... with patterned red tights in the post "Red Wine Experiments"

... with purple tights in many posts, these photos are from "Not Your Common Pea Coat and Colorful Life"

... and now I can add floral tights to my collection!

Today's outfit:
Tights - Hue. Blazer - Lane Bryant. Tee - Calvin Klein (thrifted). Skirt - Old Navy. Ballet flats - Sofft. Earrings - Ann Taylor Loft (very old).

Today's outfit photos by Anna, the old posts by Justin.

  1. I am like you and need to venture more into coloured tights, though you are ahead of me. I have only ever worn black or chocolate brown as an adult. So colour and texture are on my list. I am not like you in that I definitely do wear the same outfit twice. I don't have enough clothing not to and I tend to have favourite combinations which I look forward to wearing. I don't change throughout the day for pleasure, if it happens it's for practicality, though it might take me few tries to get the outfit right before I venture out of the bedroom.

I love all your outfits here with the different tights, but those floral ones sure are fun! I can see why you were determined to wear them and find just the right clothes to go with them. Mixing all those prints was perfect!
I too love filigree and have a few pairs of earrings like that. I love Celtic jewelry for its intricate twists and knots too.
Your lip colour does not look strange to me, but I guess you mean it isn't actually that colour in reality. It looks nice though. And finally, Anna dida great job with the photography, though she has a very lovely model to work with.

    1. Thank you for your so very detailed comment, Shawna! I appreciate. I repeat some outfits (especially casual ones), of course, but usually there is something changed about it. Like different jewelry, scarf/no scarf, different shoes, new layer added etc. I have been adding enough clothes to my wardrobe, so I can learn and play with it in many different ways. And I don't dress up every day. :)

Tights are fun when they present interest all by themselves, and even can inspire a whole new outfit, as I found with the floral tights here. :) I am definitely going to continue with brightly colored tights and with patterned tights as I go. I'll be very interested to witness your journey too! :)

  2. I started to wear coloured tights not so long ago and I really like it. It is really fun and they can change the look of the whole outfit. I love your floral tights and the things you chose to wear with them work just perfectly. The shoes look like extension of the tights! And I noticed your earrings, very beautiful indeed.

    1. I like it when shoes look like extension of legs! :) And you of course had to notice the earrings, Olga! Your jewelry is always very interesting looking!

  3. I love coloured tights. I haven't ventured into the patterned tights as much. I need to try it.

    That leopard dress is great!

Those shoes are great. How I wish I could wear ballet flats. So far I haven't been able to find a pair that don't give me blisters. Even the most expensive ones seem great at the store and then promptly give me blisters. The only ones that didn't are my real ballet shoes.

    1. I only have a couple of pairs of ballet flats. The first pair used to give me blisters, but now they seem fine (just needed some time for breaking in). These are very soft! Try this company (Sofft), they are really comfortable. These are made more like real ballet shoes.

I like this leo print dress, but don't wear it much. I wonder why... I need to find an inspirational idea for it!

  4. Coloured and patterned tights are fabulous, I feel quite dull and ordinary wearing black these days! Layering fishnets or patterned tights over a colour is another way to get a different effect (if it's cool enough for two pairs of tights not to be a problem!)
I don't change clothes during the day, ot at least not usually, not unless there has been a wardrobe malfunction, a major spillage, or I am too hot/cold! But I can understand the impulse to get an outfit right, and you did just that, I love the combination of polka dots, stripes, flowers and a dash of green!
Oh and I have to mention that leopard print dress - va va voom! xxx

    1. I really need to find ways to wear this dress more often! It is fun and comfy. I think it feels too open upfront, and I just need to get creative with it.

Love your idea to wear two pair of tights. :)

  6. I don't own any black tights - its colour & print all the way. Your patterned beauties look fantastic and you are totally rocking that sexy leopard print number.
I've been wearing many of my clothes for years but, like you, change the look with different accessories, footwear or a bag. A dress can totally transform itself with a waistcoat or a scarf.
I can't wear ballet flats, I need laces or buckles or I'd just trip up over my own feet. You look so elegant in yours.
    Have a wonderful weekend. xxxx

    1. Thank you, Vix! I so agree with you - just adding a couple of different details, and the outfit transforms into something new. I too have old beloved pieces for years. (And I regret that I gave away a few now... why did I do it?)

I did not used to wear flats till just very recently! But you sure rock your shoes and have a brilliant collection!

  7. love this flowery tights! so pretty!
but the leopard dress is stunning on you! and the green tights are a very clever choice, with black it would be too expected.
i dont like polyester tights (on my legs) - so when i must wear some for climate reasons they have to be fun :-)

    1. Oh I am so glad you liked my green tights with leo print. I too thought that it was unexpected. I don't enjoy the feeling of tights myself, and that is one of the reason why I wore pants for a few years - I did not want to wear tights in winter! But these floral ones are silky and very pleasant to wear actually. :)

  8. I love patterned tights! in the UK I find it hard to get them in my size though, never mind! I can admire those who wear them beautifully, like you! I love your outfits, the leopard dress is stunning, the green tights and shoes are divine also your purple and chatreuse combination is inspired - I do change my outfits sometimes, it tends to be on those 'I have nothing to wear' days when nothing is right, and I wail at my wardrobe! I can be a tad dramatic! x x x

    1. Oh I too have "nothing to wear" days, don't you love those? :) And I think we all know how to be dramatic - they teach us at girl school, right? :) I'll sure share links with you for bigger girls (like myself), I know that sizes are not easy to find.

Do you know the blog http://buttercupsfrocks.tumblr.com/ ?? She is amazing. She is from London, and I learn about colored tights from her a lot. I wonder where she gets hers. I am sure she mentions it. I highly recommend her blog - tons of inspiration for colorful frock loving gals.

  11. Natalia. Your enthusiasm for getting dressed up is absolutely contagious and such fun. I also love to wear patterned tights and next them with different elements and my wardrobe. I recently wore argyle tights with the printed coat and skirt and I loved that outfit. I also remember Glendas recent post where she was wearing hosiery in lavender called lavender legs. She has the blog so what 20! I really love this outfit on you - you wear it so well. Kisses, Elle

Your tights sound like tons of fun! I am yet to discover the joy of patterned tights. They are on my list for next Fall/Winter (this cool season is coming to an end, phew). And yes, Glenda is fantastic - love that post with lavender tights!!
