Red with Teal or Blue

Ta-daaa! To those of you who put bets on the color of my second beret and guessed red:
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I bought three berets this Fall: gray, blue and red. I thought that either I would share them all with my daughter, or that she would choose the one(s) she likes and make it (them) her own. And since she has just discovered her love of the color red, I was almost sure that she'd choose the red one, but to my surprise she chose the blue one instead, perhaps to match her new wool coat. The blue one was also the smallest of the three and just wouldn't fit all that extra fluff I have in my big head, so it seemed like a perfect choice anyway.

I wore both of these outfits when I was out and about with Anya, running errands, hers and mine. She was the driver (yay!) and my photographer (yay! yay!) on both occasions. We had some cold days, but mostly it was just wet and gray, with temperatures in the low 50s F, and some heavy storms thrown in (we even had a power outage for about 5 hours last Friday night).
.

The 100% wool tartan blazer in this outfit is by Talbots, bought almost 2 years ago on clearance, for only $25 (the original price was $200). I love the colors and really appreciate the quality and details - I think it looks so chic and timeless! I paired it with my red blouse (also here in NOVEMBER 2017 and FEBRUARY 2018) and jeans by Eloquii (last year) which I also scored at $20 vs. $100 full price. I don't wear jeans often these days, but I like this retro style, they feel more like trousers - high-waisted with wide leg and some cool detailing.

Other than the red beret and fanny pack (belt bag), nothing should be new to your eyes in this outfit. The teal sweater dress is old, from Lane Bryant (here in DECEMBER 2015 and NOVEMBER 2016). The red faux leather moto jacket is from the previous season, by Eloquii, and I believe is available on their site in other colors (previously shown in JANUARY 2018 and FEBRUARY 2018).

Both pairs of sunglasses are by Christian Siriano for Lane Bryant, and the long necklace with the enamel pendant is a thrift store find. We tried to show off details in the close-up shot below.

Now let's talk about fanny packs, or bag belts if you will. They became fashionable again, when the current trends turned their attention to 1980s. What's your verdict - yay or nay? I'll be honest - I have never been a fan of fanny packs, though as you can see I own one - and I like this particular one. I bought it over a dozen years ago when I was working at art festivals, from a fellow vender who made all sorts of bags out of tapestry fabric. And I used it a lot - it really is a convenient little purse for a day busy travelling or selling stuff, so you have all the little things within reach, and yet keep your hands free. I'm glad I remembered about my fanny pack when I went out that day - I really like it with this outfit.

Oh, and on the last photo you can see my enormous earrings (I almost forgot to mention them!) - they are from Nordstrom Rack clearance, and cost me just a few bucks. I think they are a fun way to add some oomph to an outfit, at the same time looking cool and classy.

your chic outfits both look very fresh in this color combination! such happy styles!
and its not only the colors and silhouettes - its the fine details too: the fringed pendant with the fringed blouse frills, the great stitching on the jeans, the pattern mix of flowers&tartan, the contrast of the materials and last but not least the fabulous earrings........all topped by the beret which suits you so well.
belly bag? not for me - not back then, not now :-D
much love - my dear friend! xxxxxx

    1. You are never far, my dear, just in the right neighborhood! :)
Thank you for your kind comment. I am getting better with details I think. I went from the large brush strokes to finer lines and details in my style journey in the last few years.
Yay to berets! Will keep my eyes open for more colors! <3 <3 <3

  2. I adore red as you know. I have the exact same beret, although I hope yours isn't as itchy as mine. I can only wear it on the coldest of days. But then it is oh so cosy. I love how berets can be pulled down over the ears in the wind.
I love the red against the teal too. Like flower petals on a grey sea.
The ruffled sleeve detail peeping out of the jacket is so sweet.
And your big earrings are just sooo cool.
Everywhere I go these days Miles drives me. He isn't quite old enough to take his test yet. Has to wait until the end of March next year. But he certainly enjoys it and is improving. He is very game!
I recently adopted a waist bag in black leather which looks just like a small purse. It has a square shape which doesn't look so eighties. I had to use it during a shoulder injury phase when I couldn't wear crossbody bags. I enjoyed it in Summer, but it became a pain with coats.
I must look it out again. I also wear it over my shoulder as a short crossbody bag. Have you seen that look?

    1. Good to see you here, my friend! Yay to our kids who are growing and driving! :) Good luck to Miles! Anya's license test is coming up soon, too.

I think waist bags can be just right for certain occasions, and yours sounds great! I would love to see it. I didn't know you had injury. Hope you are feeling better now!

  3. Both outfits are great. I love the one with jeans! Your fanny pack is gorgeous. I don't own any but I had some when I was much younger. The thrift stofe pendant and brown bag are beautiful.
I'm a great fan of big earrings and I really like yours.
    Kisses!:))

  4. I love red and teal together. This post has made me seriously reconsider the bum bag (as we call the fanny pack in the UK). I'm also loving the moto jacket... and the earrings. Given my fondness for plastics, I've been having a ball with all the affordable acrylic and perspex earrings on offer right now. No bangles though; go figure.

    1. Thank you, Buttercup! Bum bag, haha! It's a great opportunity to stock up on all things 1980s right now. You are right - what about bangles, we can't forget them! I love them, but it's challenging to find them to fit my wide hands. <3 <3 <3

    2. I added a couple of links with cool bum bags!

  5. I love both these outfits, the red beret (super colour choice) slots in effortlessly with your brilliant wardrobe, doesn't it?
Jon uses a bum bag when we're trading at festivals but, like Jazzy Jack suggested, his is strung across his shoulder. xxxx

  6. Now why didn't I think of red! It's a colour that absolutely suits you, plus it's an instant pick-me-up. I love both your outfits, but my favourite by far is the jeans, with the divine red frilly blouse and tartan blazer. With its retro vibe, that's a really cool pair of jeans. Love the enamel pendant and those huge earrings, too. I might have used a bum bag back in the late 80s, early 90s, but only when travelling. Jos has used his until a couple of years ago. Not really sure if I'd go there again, even though I have to admit that your tapestry one is rather cute! Lots of love xxx

  9. I do like your red and teal combination, the blouse is so pretty. The red beret is a good choice and will work with so many things. I must admit to not being a fan of the waist bag , either this time or first time round. I find it hard to imagine Anya being old enough to drive- where has that time gone.
Best wishes to you both, Jill. xx

  10. Both outfits are gorgeous. I love those jeans, they look great on you. High waist paired with a flare or a wide cut has always been my fav options...The first outfit is very chic, but I think I prefer the second one because I tend to be prefer dresses over jeans myself. The combination of colours is simply perfect. Red always looks great on you, and that red beret is an adorable accessory. For me red colour is always a good choice, a colour of love as I call it.

You always look beautiful and chic. I wish you all the best for the holidays.
