Modish Matrons #29: Beautiful Black

"Beautiful Black!" said Beate.
"It sure is!" said Tina and I.
And so the month of November is dedicated to this elegant, dramatic and edgy color - BLACK. I admit that I do not wear black very often, but I have a few favorite things in black, and for this outfit I remixed some of them in a new and a bit unexpected way. The only new thing in my outfit is...

Please visit my fabulous friends, TINA und BEATE
to see their unique interpretations of the theme.
I sure am intrigued by the photos I received for the collage, and now I want to see the fine details of Beate's outfit and the whole of Tina's ensemble.

I actually planned a one-piece outfit at first, but then decided to go with something a little more complex and creative than that. The first few elements came together easily and naturally. I mixed different textures, such as velvet jacket (old secondhand find, previously shown in December 2017 HERE with the same embroidered suede booties, and HERE with a polka dot tulle skirt), faux leather skirt (shown in NOVEMBER 2017) and lacy top (last time, shown in JUNE 2018). The necklace inspired by vintage brooches is another old favorite of mine. I could easily continue with the fancy vibe, choosing elegant heels, a little vintage purse, but I felt experimental, playful and perhaps just a tad naughty.

The elegant version of "the rest of the outfit" would look awesome, and I'm sure will appear with this ensemble some other time. Instead, I chose the funky 1960s vintage vinyl and tapestry bag (an antique mall find years ago) in bold saturated colors, and I guess it's time to take you off the cliff hanger, dear reader, and finally announce the only new element of my outfit: THE SOCKS! I bought them on a whim in a fun and lovely little shop in downtown Tacoma, when we visited Anya's school recently. The shop is called Stocklist and located on Pacific Avenue, near the University of Washington Tacoma (I stand right in front of it in my recent post HERE). It's filled with local art, gifts and other fun things. The socks are in some of my favorite colors and made locally in the neighboring city and state - Portland, Oregon. We really enjoyed this little gem of a shop! (It isn't an  advertisement, I just share what I like with you.)

I realize that I mixed two very different styles in one outfit, but that's what makes fashion fun -  we can mix and match anything we like! Yes, we actually can do it! So in addition to being fancy and elegant, I also went with this folksy and even a bit witchy vibe - why not? Quite perfect for the Halloween season. Justin and I went out that evening, and my outfit got compliments from a young woman. It's fun to be fun!

HaPPy HallOween! BOO!

  3. I love playing with the texture of black outfits. I love the velvet there, it really pops and contrasts although the same colour.

  4. It's unusual to see you all in black but you've done it - as the theme suggests - beautifully! A wonderful blend of textures and luxe fabrics. My favourite bag and those boots are a fantastic touch. xxx

  5. So glad that you were a tad naughty and added some unexpected colour to this otherwise black outfit. It's the naughtiness and quirkiness of this mix and max outfit which makes it totally, undeniably you, with your own unique style. That lacy blouse made me swoon, and my jaw might have dropped upon spotting your vintage brooches necklace. But the icing on the cake are the tapestry bag and of course, your secret weapon, the SOCKS! Lots of love xxx

Like yourself, I don't wear black often but I don't dislike it. Black is always an elegant choice.

  7. Dear Natalia,
boah-powwow, someone should say that black is not a color! You show us the most colorful black I have ever seen! By playing with structure and different fabrics - lace, velvet, satin ... - black is the perfect canvas for a grand entrance. And yet, your outfit does not only look elegant - this crazy combination of shoes with ornaments and colorful knitted socks and the boho bag gives the look the icing on the cake!
    Hugs and happy November-days,
    Traude
