Spring Epitome & Vintage Desk

Every Spring, with no exception, the world of fashion explodes with floral dresses - mostly in soft pastel colors. I confess, I am tempted to join the fun, but pastel tones don't work that well with my pale freckled skin. I am more of a jewel tone and warm earthy color girl who blossoms in bold pattern and strong color dresses. But this frock, I thought, offered a beautiful balance of fresh soft pastels and strong bold colors on a dark background reminiscent of the bareness of early Spring. I appreciate the comfy style of it while also being so striking. So you understand - it had to be done!

I paired my new 'Spring epitome' dress with a faux leather moto jacket which I bought on sale (same style as my red oversized one, but I got a size smaller for a slightly shorter length and closer fit). The pink earrings and silver ring with Chariote (purple rock found only in Siberia) are vintage. Both the ring and the sterling silver angel necklace are new to me, the latest one is a vintage-inspired piece hand-crafted by the contemporary American brand Mondo Mondo.

The question, of course, is where did I go dressed up like this? The answer is simple as the truth itself - thrifting and vintage hunting with my fam, where else!

Here you are, enjoying the view of my new little desk. All the details are pretty much on the photos above, I have very little do add. I found it at antique mall and wanted to get it immediately. It's very compact which is what I needed for my space, made of beautiful solid wood (probably veneer panels on the drawers), with brass handles. It is made by an American company Simmons Furniture which is still in business and is famous for its art deco period metal desks, apparently. It looks like a vanity desk and most probably originally came with a mirror, but I did not find anything about the period when it was made. Could be any time between 1930 to 1980 I suppose. What do you think? I'm curious about it, but it doesn't matter too much - as long as I love a piece, age has no relevance. I just fell in love with all the lovely carved details and elegant shapes. No matter how much I adore mid-century, my eyes are always drawn to old classis styles, so my home will always be an eclectic mix of both.

The most charming pair of Beatrix-Potteresque English country rabbits jumped at me as I was getting ready to pay for my thrift finds at Goodwill later the same day, and the tapestry comes from the same place as well. I had a really good visit then, got some pretty 1970s Mikasa cups and a pitcher, a bunch of pretty fabrics, wooden boxes for Justin's collection... When it rains, it pours, they say - I've noticed that it works with vintage hunting too.

How is Spring treating you, my dear friends and readers?
Any exciting vintage finds lately or a new dress perhaps?

Let's talk soon!

    1. Thank you, Tina! I love my rabbits, they make me smile. :) Not sure they are BP's design, rather inspired by her art (which I love). Happy hunting for a black dress, dear!

  2. There is no doubt that you had to go for that dress, as it's very you in every way! I love how you combined it with the faux leather moto jacket. What an absolutely delightful colour.
I am more than just a little bit envious of your thrifting and vintage hunting trip, which is currently off the cards here in Belgium. Even if things would be open, we could only go on solo shopping trips, which kind of takes the fun out of it!
Your desk is an amazing piece, and just perfect for your space. And look at all those gorgeous details! What a wonderful find! Sending over loads of hugs xxx

  4. indeed the epitome of spring! the whole natasha!
    very pretty dress!!
no thrifting here - still. and no vaccines in sight too. frustrating.
the little desk is cute and could be easily "mid century" :-D with its details from all over the design history - or even newer given the pristine shape of the veneers on top..... like you i do not ask for the age if i like something.

    1. Thank you, Beate! I trust Vix's and your knowledge and agree that it does have this mid-century look of wood, shape and color - the details are from other eras, and I am not the one to identify them, but I'd love to hear your opinion. The most important, we like it - such pieces change the atmosphere of our home. Hope your situation with vaccination is improving! Much love!

    2. the details at the desk are french empire (the handle with the ring and the carving around that), victorian (the legs and the beady line) and a bit art deco (the triple vertical lines) :-D

  6. I love those bold cheerful flowers adorning that easy, breezy dress!
I agree with Beate, that desk is Mid-Century and it fits in perfectly with your home. Having a maker's label is a sign of quality and I don't blame you for snapping it up without hesitation.
Our non-essential shops reopened today after four months of being closed but I'm having far too much fun at home to contemplate charity shopping! xxx

    1. Thank you, Vix! Beate and you are my go-to source of knowledge when it comes to vintage, and I trust your opinion. I'd still like this desk even if it was a newer item, but I appreciate it even more for being mid-century. :) You are amazingly productive and on fire these days!

  7. This is lovely, Natasha. I LOVE your dress and the easy breezy look you have while wearing it. The desk is a beauty also. So refreshing to have a thrift store outing. Funny how sometimes we come home with a haul and sometimes there's really nothing that calls our name. Happy spring in the Pacific Northwest. xo karen
