Wearable Art

I asked Papochka to be my photographer again today - thank you, Papa!
I often want to wear something comfortable and unpretentious (also known as casual), and at the same time interesting and just a little bit whimsical or fancy.

So I paired my "wearable art" top with skinny jeans and added colorful and a little artful accessories to this combo to take it up another notch. Since it's still February, and even though 60 F, I also wore my ruana which is my most favorite alternative to jackets. This particular ruana always reminds me of Japanese kimonos.

You probably remember this statement necklace which I wore a lot last year and showed it here on the blog more than once. The earrings are silver enamel and contain all the same colors as those presented in both the top and necklace. It was a re-gifted gift from my friend many years ago. They are lovely, though I don't wear them a lot as I prefer chunky jewelry, but I thought they worked well with the statement necklace. (My challenge is that I pretty much love everything statement!)

Showing off the long sleeves of this unique top... no need for bracelets or even rings, they are certainly also a statement.

I wore this top with black slacks for a more dramatic feel too - very different geometry or architecture (also known as proportions) in that case.

The last photo is from one of my very first posts back in 2013, it's still one of my most favorite photo sessions (more details here).

What do you think about the proportions in today's outfit?
Do you prefer this top with black bottom?
How would you wear it... if you would, of course? :)
I'd love to hear your ideas!

For plus size girls such as myself, there is a similar top in the current Lane Bryant collection, do check out their web site.

Top - Eva Varro (old)
Jeans - Lane Bryant (current, look for Tighter Tummy Technology - super comfy and soft)
Shoes - Adam Tucker Me Too (I have the same model in teal which I haven't worn yet)
Ruana - Chico's (old)
Necklace - Talbots (old)
Earrings - gift from a friend

  1. I have never heard of a Ruana before but I just love it!

I think pairing it with black was a great idea. It becomes the focal point.

    1. Ruana is another version of a poncho, wrap or blanket scarf... basically, a cozy wearable blanket. :)

  3. That's a great top, I love the Modernist print and the colours. I think I do prefer it with the black wide-legged trousers, but only because it has a more dressed up, chic sort of look, and it allows the print to shine; the casual denim and loafers outfit works wonderfully well too, just a different vibe. A maxi skirt in one of the colours in the print would look cool too.
Have a lovely weekend, Natalia! xxx

  4. That top really is art, I love it with the wide legged pants and agree with Curtise, a jersey maxi dress in one of those brilliantly bold colours would look fantastic, too.
The poncho is stunning and Papa's photography is excellent, look like Justin's got competition! xxx

    1. Soooo good to see you here, Vix!

Cobalt blue is already on the skirt wish list of mine! Though I can see an asymmetrical black pencil skirt too (a plain pencil skirt just seems a bit dull, though no doubt will show off the top).

  5. I like the outfit as you've styled it with denim - comfortable, arty, yet still dressed-up looking. Black pants add another layer of that dressed-up vibe but I'm in the mood for casual today. Heh. The colours are stunning, in your top and in your accessories. Also, the architectural styling of the poncho is incredible.

  6. Natalia,
I love this abstract top, it is so pretty you could frame it!. That photo of you wearing it with the flowers is a special image.
I appreciate everything about it, the composition the amount of black in the photo , setting you and the flowers as a jewel.
The statement necklace is my kind of beautiful, I love all of the mixed colors, a riot of happy vibrance, and you the same, with you porcelain skin, and smile.
    cheers to your Papa!

  7. I love this t. It's brightness is exactly what we all need this time of year. The necklace is perfect with it. I have to give props to anyone who wears skinny jeans but I've got to join the English girls and say that I like it best with the black pants.

    1. So good to hear from you, Connie! You are in a wonderful international company - England, Germany and Canada, and all are such gorgeous stylish ladies too! Just for fun, I'll have to make a post featuring this top with all possible companions from my current wardrobe.

  8. LOVE graphic prints like this, and the extra long sleeves make it perfect in my humble opinion. I like it with the jeans and colorful shoes especially. :-) I have a long maxi skirt with slim vertical black/white stripes. I can imagine it styled like that as well, for something unexpected. I'd also wear it with a black vest perhaps, and a colorful skirt. There are a lot of styling possibilities here! Your accessories pick up the colors nicely too. Your father did a great job with the pics! What fun. :-)

    1. Such a treat to have you here, dear Jean! I love all of your suggestions! I think I'll try it with a maxi skirt soon, and the idea of a black vest is brilliant, otherwise it gets a little overwhelming with a bright skirt (I tried a couple of times, and it just does not quite work for me).

  9. It is art! I love the modernist print, it is a statement piece and I actually adore both stylings equally, it's daytime/nightime success! like you I love anything 'statement', I don't feel I'm dressed properly without something with a little va-va voom (although I don't always execute it as well as you do!!) your Papa takes excellent shots! take care Natalia, I hope you have a great Sunday ;-) x x x

    1. Yes! Statement pieces are fun, and I love combining two or three statements together - I know it's too much for some stylistas, but I enjoy the "more is more" philosophy. I know you too! :) Good way to think of these outfits as day vs. night!

Thank you, Sandra- I'm sure Sunday will be fun. ;-)

  10. I simply love your ruana, it could easily live at my place. The bright, geometric top is a definate winner. It pairs well with either jeans or for a more dressy look black pants or as others have suggested a bright maxi skirt.Your papa has captured you so well.
